I’m a mother of three and a parent to a cat, dog, and a husband.

As you may have gathered I enjoy writing, but I also love anything
artistic, from painting to photography. I love spending time with my family

into a character or into a painting, even a photograph and when I’m not
escaping into my own worlds, I escape into other people’s devouring books
like they’re running out.

About Wolf Whistle

wolf-whistle-cover

Richard Kerrigan is on the verge of losing hope. Fired from his job for blowing the whistle on a defect that would harm service members if used as designed, he is now blacklisted in the Chicago area. A local Serbian mobster wants Richard and won’t take no for an answer.

Garou Industries, the loup garou privately owned company, has been searching for Richard to offer him a position in the company as they value having someone with his integrity on staff. Richard relocates to Manhattan to begin his new job and stays with Julien Bellaire, his mentor, who is also Richard’s Mate.

Before they can settle in, the Serbian mobster turns up dead and a corrupt cop who secretly works for the Serbians comes to New York with trumped up charges to pin the murder on Julio. With over eighty witnesses to Julio being on an airplane at the time of the murder, the cop abandons trying to frame Richard and instead plots to murder him. The loup garou request assistance from the Italian mob to protect Richard, which comes with some interesting consequences.

An Excerpt from Wolf Whistle

Chapter One

Wednesday, Second Week in June

Present Day

Red Oaks

It was Richard’s night off from the bar. He had taken his computer to Kinko’s to print out additional resumes. He got off the bus at his stop and walked the two blocks to his studio. A well-dressed man stepped out of a limousine and spoke to him as he began to enter the building. “Are you Richard Kerrigan?”

“Yes, I’m Richard Kerrigan, but I want nothing to do with Mr. Kasun, so please leave me alone.”

The man blew out a breath. “I don’t know a Mr. Kasun. I represent Mr. Etienne Daurensbourg, who has recently married Mr. Julio Reyes. I am Gilbert Renaud. My employer asked me to find you as a wedding present for his husband.”

“Julio? I haven’t heard his name in ten years. Is he okay?” Astonished, Richard’s jaw dropped open.

“Mr. Reyes will only be in town until tomorrow morning. If you come with me, you can see him for yourself. I will arrange for your transportation home after the visit.”

“I thought you worked for Davilor Kasun, but Kasun wouldn’t know about Julio.” Mr. Renaud opened the door of the limousine. Richard hesitated, but after a few minutes got into the backseat. He missed Julio, even after all these years. He was the only friend Richard ever had that didn’t have an agenda.

After thirty minutes, the limo rounded the circular driveway of a house that had to be over thirty thousand square feet. Gilbert stopped the limo at the entrance. There were cars parked everywhere.

“Eh…Gilbert, where are we?”

“This is Mr. Daurensbourg’s home in Highland Park. I am one of his assistants. If you follow me, I’ll bring Julio to you.” Mr. Renaud brought Richard to what seemed like a breakfast room and asked him to sit and wait. Richard scanned the room. Strangely, he smelled peaches. There must be a bowl of the ripe fruit on the kitchen counter.

Gilbert signaled Etienne. What are those two up to? Julio wondered.

Etienne nodded and turned to Julio. “I have another wedding present for you.” He wore a secretive, pleased smile.

Julio scolded, “You shouldn’t have bought me anything else. I have everything I need, right here.” He hugged his husband. Etienne motioned Gilbert forward.

Gilbert approached him smiling. “Alpha Mate, we found Richard Kerrigan. He’s waiting for you in the breakfast room.”

Julio broke out into a huge smile. “Thank you Etienne, Gilbert, I can’t believe you did this for me! Come with me and I’ll introduce you to Richard; besides, I couldn’t find my way in this barn anyway.”

Etienne laughed and put his arm around Julio’s shoulders, and they made their way to the breakfast room.

Julio gasped. Richard’s head was visible from the entrance to the room. His red hair had turned to a darker auburn. It called him like a beacon. Julio stopped and frowned. He knew that posture from when they were kids. Something was very wrong in Richard’s world. He sent a message to his Mate: Richard is in some kind of trouble. I recognize those lines on his forehead.

Maybe we can help, Etienne offered.

Julio flashed his Mate a brilliant smile. Maybe we can. He held out his hand.

“Richard, by the gods, I thought I’d never see you again,” Julio greeted his old friend.

Richard stood, ran to Julio and gave him a hug. Etienne emitted a low growl, and Julio sent him a terse message over the Mate link. Don’t be stupid. I told you we were childhood friends. It would be like screwing my brother.

Etienne backed down gracefully by holding his hand out to Richard. “I’m Etienne Daurensbourg, Julio’s husband.”

Richard glanced around the room then back at Etienne, smiling. “Julio, with your determination, I always knew you’d do well.”

He cocked his head. “Until recently, not as well as you think, but tell me about you. Why are you still in Chicago? I would have thought that Silicon Valley called your name years ago. Sit down with us so we can talk. Gilbert, do we have any Coke?”

“Most certainly. I’ll bring you two cold cans right away. Etienne, would you like a beer?”

“I’m sorry, Richard. Would you like a beer instead?” Julio asked.

“No, I still don’t like the taste. Remember that day when we were thirteen, and we stole the six pack from your father’s garage refrigerator and proceeded to get wasted? I was so sick. I haven’t touched a beer since.” Richard grinned then became earnest. “It’s so good to see you. My parents called Social Services and tried to find you, but they wouldn’t tell us where you were because we weren’t relatives. Mom and Dad offered to foster you, but the state said they weren’t qualified, and they couldn’t have you anyway since we were moving out of state. I must have sent you more than two dozen letters the first two years, but when you didn’t reply, I thought you didn’t want to hear from me.”

“I wanted to see you. Social Services wouldn’t let me contact anyone since I was a minor and a ward of the state. They put me in a group home because I was gay and then promptly forgot about me.” Julio sniffed.

“We wouldn’t have abandoned you. We couldn’t find you.” Richard’s brow furrowed. “What happened to you?” he asked.

“Nothing good. That’s a long story better left for another time. It’s nice to know that your family attempted to help. What about you? Did you ever get into MIT?”

“Yes, and I graduated summa cum laude, first in my class.” Richard’s eyes misted. “I received many job offers, one I especially wanted to take, but Dad died of a heart attack in my junior year in college. Just after that, Mom developed breast cancer, so I accepted a job with Switched Power Designs in Chicago.”

“Isn’t that the company that was in the news for defective power supplies for the Cougar II?” One of Etienne’s eyebrows arched.

“Yes, it was. The power supply was my design.” Richard clenched his fist, and his eyes narrowed. “It wasn’t designed that way. I specified Charter components with a high heat tolerance. When it went into production, the production manager decided to use Minster components instead. I tested the design with Minster components because they were an approved vendor, but it ran too hot. I wrote several reports describing the problem and complained all the way up to the president of the company. When I saw they wouldn’t budge, I went to my congressman. It cost me my job. I could have sued, but I didn’t have the money because I spent my savings on a decent hospice for Mom.”

“Were you able to get a job somewhere else?” Etienne asked.

Richard shook his head. “Switched Power said I was fired for insubordination and poor performance. They blamed me for the Cougar fiasco and gave me a poor reference, even though I had signed documentation saying that changing out the components made the design faulty and downright dangerous.”

Etienne’s fist came down on the table. “Many of our people serve. It’s bad enough there is the danger of explosion from an enemy planted IED, but to have your vehicle catch fire because of a defective part is untenable. Especially if the manufacturer knew about the issue beforehand and refused to fix it.”

Richard hung his head. “They blamed me and therefore I’m toxic. Now I work as a clerk at a small grocery store, and I bartend at night. The two jobs pay my college loans, my rent, and my phone, but they don’t leave me with money for much else.” He took a deep breath and blew it out in exasperation. “I know I did the right thing, but I’m paying for it.”

Gilbert returned with the sodas for Julio and Richard and a beer for Etienne. Alpha, he had his computer and a folder with him when I picked him up. Maybe the folder contained resumes. Garou could…

“But enough of my sad story. I’m still sending out resumes, although I know what happens as soon as they check my work history.” Richard shrugged. “Even though I was fired, I’m glad I did what I did. They said a failure rate of a little more than five percent was acceptable. To me it meant five out of every hundred vehicles would catch fire and immolate the troops using it for transport. That wasn’t right, and I couldn’t let it stand. It was my design.”

“You have proof of this?” Etienne asked, jaw clenched.

“Yes, on my computer I have time-stamped emails and reports that I sent to management. I also have the specs for the original design with an explanation of why I didn’t use our preferred vendor, Minster, and specified Charter instead.”

Etienne’s lips thinned. “They’re not supposed to be able to fire a whistleblower.”

“No, they’re not but there was nothing I could do to stop them.

Julio gazed up at his Mate with firm purpose. “Etienne, Garou has divisions that use engineers…Maybe we could…”

“Garou?” Richard asked, his eyes growing big. “Garou is the top employer in North America for engineers, known for treating their employees with respect, and providing excellent compensation.”

Julio grabbed Richard’s hand. “Most of the people here today are on the board of Garou Industries. Do you have a resume with you?”

“I have thirty copies. I just came back from Kinko’s when Mr. Renaud caught me on the stoop. Do you think they’d read it?”

“I can guarantee it.” Julio peered over Richard’s head at Etienne and let go of his friend’s hand.

“Of course, we’ll read your resume, if only because you’re a friend of Julio’s and our family loves him.” Etienne kissed the top of Julio’s head.

Richard’s hands were shaking. “I have them here in my satchel.” After he sat down, he opened his bag, carefully removed his computer and pulled out the folders that contained his resumes. He handed one to Etienne, along with copies of personal letters of recommendation from his professors. He also retrieved both the reports he’d sent to management and the sheets containing the test results with the Minster and Charter components.

Etienne read the documents.

“For what I want to do, I should have a master’s. I wanted to continue on to get it, but Mom was sick, so I had to make some money to keep her comfortable for her last few months.”

“Gilbert, please go upstairs and bring Armand, Julien, and Henri down to meet Richard.”

“Please, Mr. Daurensbourg, I didn’t come to tell my story, I came to find out how Julio was doing.”

“First, call me Etienne. You’re Julio’s friend. Of course, I’ll help, if I can. To be honest, Garou searched for you after the congressional hearings. We want to hire engineers of your expertise and integrity. At Garou, you would have been promoted for doing what you did.”

Julio grinned at the flabbergasted expression on Richard’s face.

Armand came down the stairs, followed by Henri and then Julien.

Etienne swept out his arm as he made the introductions. “Armand La Marche, Julien Bellaire and Henri Giraud, this is Richard Kerrigan, the young man who exposed the power supply fiasco at Switched Power Designs. He and Julio grew up together before Julio’s parents drowned.”

Richard stood to meet Julio’s friends.

Julio took over. “Richard, Armand is the Chief Executive Officer of Garou Industries, Henri is the Director of Security, and Julien is the Director of Production and Quality Assurance.”

Armand walked over to shake his hand, followed by Henri and then Julien. When Julien’s hand touched Richard’s, a spark flickered between them. Julien’s jaw dropped. Richard jumped back. Julio broke out in a huge grin.

Henri excused himself. “I’ll bring the others down,” he said sadly and went back up the stairs to get the other members of the board.

Santa's Son -photo and quote

An Excerpt from Santa’s Son…

Passions have always ruled my family.

Always. My father’s name is Pelznickel, but he has been called many things throughout the millennia. Saint Nicholas. Kris Kringle. Santa Claus.

Yes. That Santa Claus. The man who’s brought joy to the children of the world for thousands of years. People have thought him a child’s story, a myth.

I spared a glance over my shoulder to ensure the redhead was gone and I was alone. Satisfied, I rubbed my right index finger along the side of my nose. A feeling of pins and needles covered me, as if my entire body had lost circulation. In a way, it had. The warm sandy beach I’d been walking on blurred and swirled in my vision, quickly being replaced by my bedroom.

The first few times I’d ever teleported, I’d been convinced I’d stayed still and the world had moved around me. Now I knew better.

Frantic knocking greeted my arrival.

“What is it?” I called.

“Master Schonesgeschenk, your father is looking for you.”

Fighting the urge to roll my eyes, I strode to the door. The fat little gnome waiting for me on the other side was dressed in thick green robes with white trim. His long white beard nearly reached his waist. “Astlin, how many times must I ask you to call me Shawn? It’s just Shawn, I swear.”

Excerpt

Odin

The tall, handsome man with silver hair sits contemplating his newly refurbished halls in what could easily be described as his palace, if he so chose, his ravens perched behind him on the back of his sofa. The Armani suit he wears does nothing to disguise his hard, muscled body, a hardness that seems to be emphasized by the leather patch he wears where his left eye once used to be. He stands and begins to pace his room as his thoughts run deeper, his ankle length leather coat swirling round him. Spread out before him is a huge map of Midgard. It shows the many landmasses from which he receives no warriors for Valhalla. He considers how the Æsir are very conscious of their links to Midgard. While Asgard is constantly being updated to reflect the fashions of the Nine Realms, it is Midgard that has prominence. However, he does not have influence over all Midgard, just a very small part. It amuses him that to his knowledge the Midgardians still consider him as a god whose time ended in their ninth century, that the Æsir are considered on Midgard to mirror the Vikings of their past. It makes it easy for him and his fellows to walk the streets of Earth. All the streets of Earth.

He muses to himself. “The mortals have always been aware of us, even if they don’t openly worship us in the ways the Vikings did. Some do not seem to be quite as devoted to the White Christ as they have for the last thousand years. Some even go as far as to state they believe in no gods. Fools…

Still the people influenced by the old Viking world have kept us firmly in their culture. Especially since the period they call Victorian after a great Queen, when they romanticised the Vikings. We are in their museums and their books, in their children’s schools. Men wear Mjolnir round their necks.

I am Odin, chief god of Asgard, worshipped by the Vikings, remembered on Earth at each mention of Wednesday, for I am also known as Woden among the Germanic peoples.

My Valkyries are the collectors of the slain. The valiant dead brought from the field to join my army in Valhalla, the hall of the dead. There they feast all night and fight all day.

I have my Valkyries in place in certain areas of Midgard and everything is proceeding apace there, but I need to augment my forces before the final war and Ragnarok. My Ladies are not all working. There is potential for them to scout for me elsewhere.

When I look further afield I look to the country they call America, to a world my Vikings briefly touched upon. I look at the people there and I can see the interest in Vikings, in everything to do with their culture including us.

Which brings me back to my Valkyries, I am going to send for a flight of them to go down and survey the situation in more detail.

Best I tell Freya at some point, so that she won’t be surprised. She receives half of everything the Valkyries bring to Asgard, and so I need to tell her to expect an increase in her share of the dead.”

“I call my chosen Valkyries to me, I summon Mist as Mist, Kara as Wild, Rota as Storm, Alvitr as Strange, Hlathguthr as Swan, Sigrun as Victory and Skuld as Future.” I use the modern equivalent of their Norse names, if they go to America with their old names they will encounter problems, not least that the humans may have difficulty pronouncing them.

Seven of my Valkyries appear on their cloud horses, dismounting their steeds and falling to one knee.

They are the Valkyries of old in appearance, all but the redhead Strange have blonde hair. The differences come in costume, instead of silver or gold helmets they wear brimmed pale leather hats. Their blood red armour has been replaced with red leather jackets or some other red item of clothing. Little things make so much difference.

“My ladies, it occurs to me that you are not as busy on Midgard as you once were. Therefore I have come up with a plan to make use of your skills in a way that might be beneficial to me. I want you to go to the land called America.

There you will look into the possibility of recruiting warriors for Valhalla.

You will find a place on the continent to set up a compound and furnish it with appropriate animals and buildings so that you can bring potential recruits to stay, to further instruct them in our stories.

You will have all the necessary resources you need for your mission. I foresee that your task will take a number of years.

Mist, you are in charge, but I know you are all capable. Go and make plans.”

They bow their heads as I leave the room, and as I close the door I hear their steeds departing.

Book Cover, Night of Pentacles by Nina MasonToday we celebrate the release of Knight of Pentacles, book three in Nina Mason’s Knights of the Tarot series. Unlike the first two books in the series, which Nina revised and re-released on May 24, Knight of Pentacles has never been released before.

Knight of Pentacles, an erotic PNR/UF set primarily on Scotland’s Black Isle, tells of the romance between Sir Axel Lochlann, who guards the portal into Avalon, and Jenna Cameron, the daughter of a witch who hasn’t yet discovered her powers. Their love story is based on the old Scottish ballad of Tam Lin, which plays an important role in the book.

Here’s the blurb:

The future looks bleak for Jenna Cameron when, after a five-year engagement, her fiancé breaks it off the night before the wedding. Hoping to regroup, Jenna decides to drive alone to the cottage on Scotland’s mysterious Black Isle where they were supposed to spend their honeymoon. When her car breaks down, Jenna wonders if her troubles can get any worse. Then, while cutting through a secluded glen, she sees a handsome man bathing in a waterfall. The next day, she learns the man she saw is the faery knight who guards the portal into Avalon, the otherworld island ruled by Morgan Le Fay.

Jenna, ready to be rid of the virginity she’s saved in vain, offers herself to Sir Axel Lochlann, the shaman knight of Faery Glen. From that moment on, she finds herself inside a faery tale complete with druids, goblins, runic magic, and vampire owls. She also discovers powers she didn’t know she had—powers she can use to break Sir Axel’s bonds to Queen Morgan.

First, however, she must persuade Axel to put his desire to be free ahead of his duty to the queen he’s sworn to serve and obey.

Here’s a little more about the Knights of the Tarot series:

Knights of the Tarot, a four-part series, was born of a relatively simple concept. Nina wanted to write a paranormal/fantasy series incorporating different forms of divination. Tarot cards, astrology, runes, numerology, and the like. From that kernel grew the overarching storyline. The heroes of this contemporary paranormal series are Scottish noblemen of times past who were taken by the faeries into Avalon to serve as breeding drones to the queen, the legendary Morgan le Fay. Each of the books tells the story of a particular knight and the heroine whose love saves him from his unhappy existence.

Each hero grapples with a different relationship with their cruel and selfish queen. Callum Lyon, the knight of book one (Knight of Wands), is free of Morgan’s influence, having escaped Avalon after faking his death. Leith MacQuill, the knight of book two (Knight of Cups), was expelled from Avalon after the queen discovered his affair with one of the ladies of her court. To punish Leith, Morgan cursed him so any women he should fall in love with in the future would die.

In Knight of Pentacles, Axel Lochlann is still enslaved to the queen, who he serves as a guardian of the portal between the mortal and immortal realms.

The Knight of Swords (book four) is Finn MacKnight does not yet know he is destined to fulfill an ancient prophecy telling of the queen’s overthrow by a natural-born drone.

The knights are blood-drinking shape-shifters who can assume the form of any creature, real or mythical, but generally take the form of their alter ego. Callum’s preferred form is a lion, Leith’s is a Kellas Cat, Axel’s is a gyrfalcon, and Finn’s is a jaguar.

Runes, Magic – the world of the Knights of Tarot

Axel Lochlann, the hero of Knight of Pentacles is a Highlander of Viking descent who uses runes for divination and magic. For those who don’t know what runes are, they’re the letters of an alphabet called the Futhark, the first system of writing developed and used by the Germanic peoples.

More than just letters to make words, each rune is an ideographic or pictographic symbol of some cosmological principle or power. When written together in various sequences, the powers can be invoked to cast protective spells. Individual runes carved into stones, bone, or wood are used to seek the guidance and wisdom of the Old Norse gods, especially Odin, who discovered the runes after hanging upside down for nine days from Yggdrasil, the Old Norse tree of life .

An Excerpt from Knight of Pentacles…

As the sputtering engine gasped its last, Jenna Cameron set her forehead against the steering wheel and groaned. Could this day get any worse? As if it weren’t enough her world had turned upside down, now her car decided to quit in the dead of night on a desolate stretch of road with no bloody cellular signal.

If not for the dream she’d had last night, she’d be Mrs. William Comstock right now, on her way to the honeymoon cottage she’d rented with the man she’d waited five long and frustrating years to marry.

The thought of William sent a chill through Jenna. In the dream, she’d seen herself driving off the edge of a cliff. She was married to William and utterly miserable. As her car soared over the edge of the precipice, she heard her mother’s voice. “The right man is out there, waiting for you to find him. But it will never be if you bind yourself to a man you don’t love.”

As soon as she awoke, she rang William. When she told him about the dream, he said, as she’d secretly hoped he would, “I was willing to overlook that your mother was a witch because I believed your father had safely guided you away from the path of darkness, but now I see that, like her, you have been led astray. I pray someday you will embrace the Light of God, Jenna. I truly do. But, for now, I cannot risk my own immortal soul by marrying someone so susceptible to the darkness.”

William, a Presbyterian pastor like her father, blamed everything he did not understand on the devil.

As relieved as Jenna was to have escaped, the sudden change of course had thrown her life into chaos. Expecting to be married, she’d given up her job and flat in Edinburgh and, consequently, was left with no source of income and nowhere to live.

So, she was on her way to the rented cottage in Rosemarkie, a small seaside town on Scotland’s Black Isle. Since she couldn’t get her deposit back, it seemed like a good idea to use the cottage to reflect and regroup.

Coming all this way alone had suddenly lost its appeal, but here she was—and wallowing in self-pity was not going to solve anything. According to the Google map she’d printed out, she wasn’t far from her destination. She might as well suck it up and walk the rest of the way. When she got there, she could ring a garage about her car.

Grabbing her purse, her forest-green wool cloak, and the battery-powered torch she kept in the glove box, she climbed out of the car and set off along the rural tree-lined road, which was dark and a little spooky. No cars passed her in either direction. Crickets chirped all around and small rustlings from the surrounding woods startled her sporadically. Senses alert, she stopped repeatedly to check her mobile for a signal.

Her heart pounded and, despite the chill in the air, she was sweating under her cloak and sweater. The only good thing she could say about her present predicament was that her fear of being torn to pieces by wild animals had temporarily eclipsed her other worries.

She didn’t know how long she’d been walking when she came to an old stone bridge. Just beyond was a sign. She shone the beam of her torch at the words carved into the wooden plaque.

Faery Glen

Jenna took heart. She’d read something about the glen on the website for the cottage, so she shouldn’t have much farther to go. Unfortunately, she needed to pee rather urgently. Might there be somewhere to go in the glen?

Venturing into a forest in the middle of the night might not be the smartest thing she’d ever done, but her bladder was bursting and she wasn’t about to tinkle by the side of the road. Just because no cars had gone by since she’d started walking, didn’t mean one wouldn’t appear the moment she dropped her knickers. Besides, there was a carpark abutting the glen, so there might be a public lavatory there as well.

Up above, the sky was an indigo canvas splattered with specks of white, some larger than others. She crossed the small asphalt lot. Finding no bathroom, she squatted in the bushes. When she’d finished her business, she shone the torch into the glen. Everything outside the beam was pitch black. Water ran somewhere nearby. Thirst drew her down the footpath. All that crying had made her as parched as a dry sponge.

I’ll only go a little ways, find the stream, and take a wee sip.

The hollow clomp of her footsteps disturbed the silence as she crossed a wooden bridge. On the other side, the path curved sharply. In a clearing just beyond the turn were the falls. In the silver light of the full moon, the cascading water reminded her of the bridal veil she might never get a chance to wear.

Then, she saw him. A man in the pool below the falls. He was stark naked, soaking wet, and had his back to her.

Alarm electrifying every nerve ending, she stepped back into the shadows. Her first thought was that he might be a homeless man who’d taken refuge in the woods. He had a beard and long hair, so it seemed the most logical explanation. Her next thought was that he might be performing some sort of ritual. She was on the Black Isle, after all, in a place called Faery Glen on the night of a full moon, so his being a New Age warlock or druid didn’t seem all that infeasible. A long shot, perhaps, but not meters outside the realm of possibility.

When curiosity overrode her apprehension, she stepped closer to get a better look at him. The moonlight bathing his glistening physique revealed a tall, slender frame with broad shoulders, narrow hips, and a shapely bum. Wetness and poor lighting made telling the color of his hair impossible. Light brown, maybe, or dark blond. She started a little when he bent over and shook his head like a dog. As he threw it back, he raised his muscular white arms to push the clinging wet hair off his face.

Despite her long engagement and having achieved the ripe age of twenty-five, she’d never seen a naked man before. Not in the flesh, anyway, and watching this one bathing in the wild was making her feel things she shouldn’t. The prospect of being caught spying on him was even more unsettling.

Ducking behind the thick trunk of the nearest tree, she watched as he continued his bath. Drunk on a tart cocktail of shame and lust, she took in the graceful slope of his shoulders, the long muscles supporting his serrated spine, and the alluring dimples just below the small of his back. His beautiful form and the way the moonlight sparkled on the droplets clinging to his skin made her pulse race and her knees weaken.

A strong urge to touch him welled up inside her. How badly she wanted to run her hands over every glistening curve and indentation of his manly form—both for prurient reasons and to absorb some of his confidence the way plants absorbed sunlight. As exposed as he was to the elements, he seemed admirably comfortable in his skin.

She’d never felt that at ease with herself, even when alone. All her life, she’d been made to feel inferior. As much as she didn’t want to believe that she was, part of her did.

Mesmerized by the man in the pool, she went on watching. Something told her he was like her mother. Esoteric rather than religious. Open-minded instead of rigid. Accepting, not judging. She couldn’t say how or why she sensed this about him. She only knew she felt it deep down in some instinctive part of her psyche.

Hope fluttered in her heart. Could he be the one her mother spoke of in the dream? Scoffing at her romantic delusions, she smashed the thought with the rock of reason and headed back to the footpath.
