About Murder Girl

Murder Girl Book CoverNew York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones returns with the second book in her electrifying series featuring Lilah Love, an FBI profiler who doesn’t fight her dark side—she embraces it.

It’s Lilah Love’s job to inhabit a killer’s mind. The unapologetically tough FBI profiler is very comfortable there. But her latest case is making her head spin. It’s a string of brutal assassinations carried out across the country, each tied to a mysterious tattoo. Body by body, she’s followed the clues all the way back to her hometown. And every step of the way, the killer has been following her.

Here, beneath the glamour of the privileged Hamptons community, is a secret long buried but never forgotten. It’s bigger than Lilah. It’s powerful enough to escape the reach of the FBI. And it’s more personal than anyone can imagine. Because it’s hiding in Lilah’s own past. To fight it, she’s forced to turn to her lethally tempting ex, Kane Mendez. He’s an expert at bringing out Lilah’s darkest impulses. If she plans to survive, she’s going to need them.

An Excerpt from Murder Girl

I enter the building and ignore the pretty brunette behind the triangle-shaped stone desk and head to the stairs.

“Excuse me,” she calls out, but I ignore her. Kane knows I’m coming. He has people watching me and this building. He knows I’m in the building by now. I don’t need “sweet thing” down there to announce me in yet another way. I’m at the top of the stairs before she finishes her fourth excuse me, which is now a bit louder, as if I just haven’t heard her the other three times. I turn down the hallway and walk toward the desk outside Kane’s office where Tabitha sits, minus any more originality today than the last time I was here. She’s still bleached blonde, with her fake, giant-ass boobs hanging out of a silk blouse with numerous buttons undone that turn it into a slut show that could have been professional.

I pass her without a word, approaching Kane’s double doors, when she says, “Drama follows you, Lilah Love.”

“No,” I say without looking at her. “Dead bodies follow me.” I glance over my shoulder at her. “You should remember that.”

And with that statement that really had no purpose other than it felt really damn good, I open Kane’s door.

I step inside Kane’s office and find him sitting behind his desk, just in time to hear him say, “She’s here,” into his intercom and then release the button.

With exaggerated drama that I reserve for moments when I want to be a smart-ass or simply announce my fucking presence, I use my body to shut the door, but I don’t hang out and wait for it to grow roots. I rotate and charge toward Kane and that King Mendez desk of his that he doesn’t get to use as shelter. By the time I round the wooden atrocity, he’s standing, towering over me in a charcoal suit and a purple shirt with black stripes and some sort of black-and-gray tie. It’s flashy, expensive, and works on him when it would not on nine out of ten other people. But then, while I keep a low profile—aside from the door drama, of course—and favor my black nondescript looks, his entire persona says “look at me” with the intended message of “I have nothing to hide.” A lie he tells the world and, after he drugged me to keep me from knowing what happened last night, apparently me.

We stand there for a beat or ten without words before he says, “Lilah,” and the very fact that he says it like sex is all it takes for me to snap.

I slap him in the face because my bare fist is too small to hurt him the way his jaw would hurt me. It’s also a disgrace to a man to be slapped, which is why one UFC fighter I’ve watched here and there does it to his opponents. And Kane is my opponent. He turns his head with the force of the blow, my palm stinging in the aftermath.

“Well now, beautiful,” he says, fixing me with a brown-eyed stare. “I know you like it rough, but is now the time? We both have questions we want answered.”

I slap him again, and this time he catches my wrist before I pull back. I try to slap him with my free hand, and he catches it as well, this time before contact. “You get two, not three.”

My gaze flicks to the handprint on his right cheek that matches the one on the left before I meet his stare and say, “Two was pretty damn satisfying.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about your stalker?” he demands, his question low, lethal, his anger banked just beneath the surface, while mine is the cherry on top of every lie he’s told me. “Because we both know that’s what we’re dealing with here,” he adds.

“Let go of me, Kane,” I bite out, my voice taut with impatience. No. Make that a desire to smack him again.

“After you tell me about your stalker and the notes.”

“Let go of me, Kane,” I repeat slowly, “or my next move will be a knee to your family jewels. And I promise you, it will be hard enough that neither of us will have to worry about our urge to fuck ever again.” My jaw sets hard, but he doesn’t release me. “You drugged me,” I remind him, “and then searched my house before leaving me with a gun that I was too drugged to use. So if you think I won’t do it—”

He releases me but doesn’t step back. “I didn’t leave you with a gun you couldn’t use. I kept you at my house until sunrise, and I left a team guarding your place, front and back. I protected you, like I always do.”

I don’t analyze why that makes me angrier. That’s for later. For now, there is this: “I’d pull my gun on you and back you off, Kane, but I swore the next time I did that, I’d shoot you. And I need information from you.”

“I’m all yours, beautiful,” he says, holding his hands out. “I always am.” He motions to the sitting area to his left and behind him. “Let’s sit and make this peaceful.”

“Peaceful, my ass,” I say.

My Review of Murder Girl

Murder Girl (Lilah Love, #2)Murder Girl by Lisa Renee Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you love mystery-thrillers with twists and turns that will leave you questioning everything and everyone, the Lilah Love series, by Lisa Renee Jones, is your perfect summer read. If you crave dark, seductive, alpha men pitted against smart, strong, capable heroines, Kane and Lilah will absolutely rock your world.

I can’t say enough about how much I love this intelligent, complex, seductive thriller. Murder Girl, as the heroine calls herself, is a force to be reckoned with – a take-no-prisoners, in-your-face heroine with a spine of stainless steel and the determination to overcome anything or anyone who gets in her way. She takes perverse delight in disrupting the high-society status quo, relentlessly pursuing an assassin whose next target might be Lilah herself. As the trail heats up, it becomes more and more apparent that all roads lead back to one night, and one dark secret, shared by Lilah and Kane. But it’s so much deeper than that, bigger than anything Lilah and Kane can begin to imagine – and so much more than I expected.

This novel – and this series – is truly unique in its complexity and depth. The characters are layered and authentic. The theme is all about trust: who has it, who deserves it, and who uses it as a tool to manipulate the unsuspecting masses. The threads of suspicion so cleverly woven throughout the story make it impossible to know who you can trust – other than the heroine – from start to finish (and even beyond, since the series will continue).

Lilah, Kane, and a cast of complicated secondary characters take you for a long, dangerous walk on the wild side down a narrow, treacherous ledge – the fine line between good and bad, right and wrong, truth and deception, light and darkness. It leaves you reeling with questions and grappling with feelings that will push your boundaries nearly to their limit, but also leave you wanting more.

This is not a stand-alone – you must read book one, Murder Notes, first. There are some very difficult scenes with violence that might be disturbing for some readers — but are dangerously addictive to fans of the dark romance, mystery-thriller genre. If you love complex, multi-dimensional characters and compelling storylines that will make you obsess over a series long after you close the book, give the Lilah Love series a chance to thrill you. It’s amazing.

My Review – 4.5 Stars

If you’ve read my previous reviews of Lisa’s work, you know that Sean, from the Dirty Money series, is at the top of my heroes list. With Dirty Rich Cinderella Story, Cole Brooks nearly knocked Sean off his pedestal, but not quite. He’s everything I love in an alpha male—gorgeous, powerful, determined, intelligent, charming, and rich; but he’s also thoughtful, generous, and full of integrity. He’s confident, but not arrogant or selfish. He’s also slightly conflicted and possessive, which adds dimension to his character. He’s the whole sexy hero package. I wanted more of him.

Lori, the heroine, is deeply conflicted as a result of personal traumas and disappointments, and as a result, she gets in her own way throughout the story. She’s quick to judge and even quicker to leap to conclusions – most of which are flawed. She wants Cole, but can’t seem to fully commit for at least 80% of the book, and it’s often frustrating (but necessary to the plot). Lori is smart, driven, and determined, but also over-reactive and stubborn. In Lori’s world, there is only black and white, no shades of gray. The disappointments of life experience influence her decisions and make her resistant to meet Cole halfway – that’s her biggest challenge as she struggles with her attachment to, and need for, Cole – the Prince Charming in her Cinderella story.

Cole and Lori are powerful as a couple, personally and professionally – their desire for each other is so hot that sparks fly off the page even before the sexy times begin. They are as intense and passionate as can be. They’re intellectual and sexual equals, and their push-pull power dynamic is fully expressed in the bedroom…and everywhere else.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and was delighted to see a few Walker Security favorites in the mix. Reece, Cat, Adam, and Rick always bring an element of excitement to the plot; their involvement in the story feels comforting and familiar, but also adds a little humor when it’s needed most.

The only thing missing for me in this delightfully seductive story was the element of risk and suspense that I crave in Lisa’s stories. I kept waiting for something to go horribly wrong – something that would test their relationship in a dramatic way. I won’t say I was disappointed – but I’m an adrenaline junkie and love a romantic suspense angle that builds to a dramatic conclusion (see my previous comments about Sean and the Dirty Money series!).

I may add more to this review as I give it a little more thought, but for now, just trust me, buy it or borrow it, and read it. This fairy tale is a keeper – a must for romantics everywhere.

AN EXCERPT FROM DIRTY RICH CINDERELLA STORY…

I own you.

With those words, my words, my intent in the air, and my fingers still tangled in Lori’s hair, I kiss her, a deep, possessive kiss meant to claim her, take her, make her mine, if only for this night. And she knows it too, because when my lips part hers, she pants out, “No one owns me.”

“Then, sweetheart, you’ve never been properly fucked.” I slide my hands under her jacket, settling my palms on her shoulders.

“I guess that depends on how you define properly.”

I turn her to face in the opposite direction, dragging the jacket down her arms and tangling it around her wrists, and then I lean in close. “As dirty as possible,” I promise. “And with you on my tongue, in as many ways as we both find possible.”

“Is this how you own me?” she demands. “By binding my arms?”

“As much as I’d like to have you at my mercy, sweetheart,” I say, tossing the jacket aside, and turning her to face me, “I’m selfish enough to want your hands and mouth fully available, in any way, shape, or place you so choose to use them.” I walk us backward, toward the oversized chair made perfectly for the kind of hot, wild fuck in our near future, before my hands fall from her waist. “I want to watch you undress.”

“When do you undress?” she challenges.

“We have one condom, sweetheart. Let’s make it last. Undress for me, Lori.”

Her teeth scrape her bottom lip, and for just a moment, her eyes cut, but not before I see the flicker of nerves in her stare. And right then, I know that I’ve read her accurately up to this point. I know that her control is both a necessity and a wall that protects her. I know that no one has made it safe for her to leave those things at the door. No one has ever seen her really truly naked and the only way that happens is to do exactly what I’m doing. Push her out of her comfort zone, pull her into the moment, where she forgets the walls, and lives nowhere but here in the moment. That’s the place where nothing exists but the two of us.

Her eyes meet mine again, and I see the decision in them. She’s not going to run like she did on the street tonight. She unzips her skirt and caresses it down her slender, but curvy hips. It pools at her feet, and she kicks it aside, allowing me to admire her long legs in lacy thigh-high hose, my gaze catching on the slender strip of lace in the vee of her body.

Her fingers catch on the hem of her blouse, and she tries to hide the small, inhaled breath of courage she draws before pulling it and her loose bra over her head. She tosses it and stands before me, creamy pale perfection in nothing but silk and lace, her breasts high, full, nipples puckered to a pretty pink that will soon be in my mouth. “You’re beautiful,” I say. “Come here.”

“Quid pro quo,” she declares. “I’m naked, you’re naked.”

We’re still doing the push and pull, but I don’t mind, not when my mouth is soon to be all over her body, which means her mouth will soon be all over my body. I don’t want her kneeling before me unless it’s to put her mouth on my cock. That’s not my goal, not this time, at least. It’s to own her, and that means she is so damn present, she can’t think, she can only feel. That takes trust and I decide to meet her halfway. I sit down and take off a shoe, showing it to her before setting it down.

“So now I get a socked foot?” she teases, and I can feel a hint of her tension easing away, her comfort in her own skin begins to settle into place. I can feel her easing into me and the night, letting me glimpse the real woman, not the stranger.

And I find that I surprise myself by how much I want to know this woman, not just fuck her.

“The pants don’t come off with the shoes on,” I tell her, and by the time I’ve removed the second shoe, she’s standing in front of me, every creamy white, naked inch of her. She grabs it and tosses it.

“Now the pants,” she orders, making it clear that she’s no submissive, that she can hold her own, and I fucking love it. “Or the shirt.”

I reach for her hips and walk her between my legs. “You’ve distracted me,” I tell her, my lips brushing her belly, my tongue drawing a circle. She trembles beneath my mouth, and I glance up at her. “You’re owned when you can think of nothing but the person you’re with. Nothing but what they might do to you now, and in the next moment.” I twine the string at her hips in my fingers. “Or where they might lick, kiss, or touch.” I drag her panties down her legs and then lower my mouth to her sex, where I let my breath tease her. “Tell me to lick you,” I order.

Her fingers curl around the material over my shoulders. “No.”

I bite my bottom lip and shake my head. “That’s too bad, because I really wanted to know how you taste.” I nip her hip and when she gives a surprised yelp I lave the wound with my tongue, glancing up at her. “Do you want me to—?”

“Yes.”

“Say it, Lori…”

My Review of Poison Kisses, Part 1

Poison Kisses Part 1 (Poison Kisses, #1)Poison Kisses Part 1 by Lisa Renee Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I knew I would love this story, but I didn’t expect to fall head over heels in love with it. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help myself. I’m addicted. Again. Poison Kisses is a perfect mix of heart-pounding suspense, intrigue, and raw passion, interwoven with powerful themes of trust, betrayal, forgiveness and second chances. It delivers on every level.

If you’ve read Lisa’s Dirty Money Series, you’ll recognize the hero as Seth Cage, Shane Brandon’s enigmatic bodyguard, a former CIA agent with a formidable skill-set. If like me, you wanted to know more about what makes Seth tick, specifically what made him the man he is, Poison Kisses Part 1 will answer many of those questions, and again, leave you wanting more (to be delivered in Parts 2 and 3).

Poison Kisses draws Seth back to the CIA for a special assignment: to track down and possibly kill the one woman he ever loved, another former agent who abandoned him in an operation gone wrong a few years before. However, she’s not just any woman; she’s called the Poison Princess for a reason, and she’s got a killer skill-set of her own. Lingering anger, grief, and sense of betrayal drive them apart; but their explosive chemistry, coupled with remnants of their long-ago love and a thread of hope draws them together. Honestly, it could go either way at any moment, and that’s part of the breath-taking thrill of their journey.

The current mission forces them to work together to find and interrupt a mass-casualty terrorist plot before it’s too late. But the other important question is whether or not it’s too late to keep their tragic past from destroying one or both of them along the way. The possibility of death hangs over their every move. A near-desperate sense of urgency to uncover the truth sets a relentless pace that keeps the characters–and the reader–on edge from start to finish.

Poison Kisses is a series of three novellas that may be read as their own standalone story or, as companions to the utterly amazing Dirty Money series. Each of the first two books will temporarily leave you hanging–but relief is in sight. The three novellas will be released back-to-back later this month, and trust me, you do NOT want to miss a single word.

EXCERPT

“I hate you, Seth Cage,” she proclaims in what I know to be an out-of-character emotional outburst that tells me I’ve rattled her.

And earns her my cool reply. “There’s a fine line between love and hate, sweetheart,” I say, but I don’t want her to hate me and it pisses me off. What is it about this woman that makes her my weakness? “I wonder if I missed the taste of poison on your lips, or did I just choose to ignore it?” And I need to know that answer. I close my mouth down on hers, my tongue sliding into her mouth, rough, angry, but she doesn’t respond. She doesn’t even touch me, and I won’t allow her that win. I fold her against me, cupping the back of her head, my tongue licking against hers until she finally fucking moans, and responds.

And damn it, she still tastes just as good as she did, just as right when she’s wrong, but at least I know now. Everything right about this woman will always be wrong, including the moment she bites my lips, drawing blood. “I still hate you,” she hisses.

Wiping my lip, I’m wildly aroused by what just happened, which proves how fucked in the head this woman makes me. And while I’m certain we’d both be more than comfortable with the idea of me pulling her skirt up and fucking her right now, and letting her think she’s manipulating me again, that has to wait until I have her someplace to myself. I release her, snatching up her gun and shoving it under my jacket, inside my holster. “Meet me at the south exit. If you aren’t there, I’ll kill you and then move on to Plan B and kill Franklin. And yes. This is a test. Pass it or you’ll be in my bed, in handcuffs for the rest of your life.”

“You said you’d kill me.”

“After I cuff you to my bed.”

I move to the door and exit into the staff hallway, and then the main school hallway, the scent of her, sweet jasmine, clinging to my skin. Damn it, I used to love that smell.

I’m halfway to the exit when suddenly she’s beside me. “As I know you know from whatever file they gave you on me,” she says without looking at me, “I watched people die because of that man in China seven years ago when he set off poison gas in the subway. I’m not sitting back while he does it again.”

I don’t reply. I just keep walking, but now she’s by my side again, as she was for three solid months, three years ago. Her words and actions are reminding me of what I’d found so damn appealing about this woman: her conviction and her moral compass that were greater than mine, that made her too good for me, and yet, made me want her all the more. Only, it was an act, a façade maintained even now and well. She’s an enemy in an uncomfortable alliance. I don’t believe a word she has said.

We reach the exit and I pause with her directly to my right, my eyes capturing hers. “You’re with me now and no one gets to take you from me. And I’m the only one who gets to kill you.”

“You’re so damn romantic,” she says. “No wonder I missed you.”

“You missed me, sweetheart?”

“That wasn’t literal.”

My lips curve. “And yet you kissed me like you missed me.”
