EXCERPT

Luke sat in one of the chairs in the Metropolitan Opera lobby to check on the hockey game. As he watched, his phone buzzed with a text from Grace.

Where are you? The old guy next to me is hitting on me. Or maybe he’s fallen asleep. Can’t tell, but he’s leaning his head on my shoulder—either asleep or trying to look down my dress.

He chuckled. I’ll be right there to rescue you with wine. Maybe I should ask for a 16 oz. to-go cup.

I like the way you think. Meet you in the lobby. Let’s blow this popcorn stand. The old guy can drool on somebody else.

You didn’t mention drool. I think I need to kick his ass.

I’ll steal his walker just in case he’s feistier than he looks.

She slumped into his arms dramatically after she rushed out the door. “We need to make a quick exit before the old man comes looking for me and you have to defend my honor. It must be that push-up bra I bought. The old guy couldn’t help himself.”

How could he have such a great time with somebody he thought was out to get him?

“Wanna hit Chinatown for dinner?”

“We’re a little overdressed, but I’m starving. Maybe boredom makes me hungry.”

Luke grasped her arm and scrutinized her face. “Wasn’t it your idea to come here in the first place?”

She shook her head and smiled. “It’s a long and sordid tale I’d rather not tell unless I’m drunk or naked—or some combination of the two. Let’s say I learned my lesson and leave it at that.”

ABOUT WENDY BYRNE

Wendy has a Masters in Social Work and worked in the child welfare field for twelve years before she decided to pursue her dream of writing.

She spends the remainder of her days inflicting mayhem on her hero and heroine until they beg for mercy.

Chapter One

Two more hours and I can get off the damn front loader and go for a beer. Digging dirt for a new housing development is as boring as hell and, after ten straight days

I’ve had a gut full. One more year and I’ll have my Archaeology degree and yep, I’ll still be digging the stuff but it will be a hell of a lot more interesting. Instead of moving dirt from one place to another to add to the never ending concrete jungle, I’ll be moving it to uncover the past.

A flash of white in the long grass catches my eye and I shut off the machine. You can never be too careful on neglected sites where the undergrowth can be as high as three or more feet. It could be an animal, a child hiding from its parents or nothing more than a pile of stones. Whatever it is needs to be checked out. I could never forgive myself if I injured someone.

I jump down from the loader and stride through the grass which waves around me in the wind. I stand six feet four inches tall and the grass reaches my hips. Glimpsing the flash of white again, I warily approach. Pushing the vegetation aside, I find what appears to be a rock formation but it’s not natural. It’s shaped like a small pillar, around a foot high and two inches in diameter. My gut tells me it has been placed here for some specific purpose.

My curiosity is peaked and I crouch down to get a closer look. The rock of the pillar is smooth, weathered white, almost like marble. As the grass is blown by the wind, other pillars are revealed. I stand and examine each one. They are all identical, around the same height and arranged in a semi-circle. I’m intrigued. This is something my professor at University would be interested in having a look at. Pulling my phone from my back pocket, I punch the button for his direct number and wait for his answer.

Western Romance has always been my first love but I also write hot contemporary romance under my pen name A.L. Simpson.

In my Westerns I love to write about knock ‘em down – drag ‘em out fights, outlaws, bank robbery, stage hold-ups and romance.

In my Contemporary’s I write f/m, m/m and m/m/f. I usually draw on experiences for these and they usually cause more than a few tears for the readers.

When I am not writing I enjoy walking our dogs – 2 elderly Jack Russell Terriers – with my husband and travelling both overseas and in Australia.

The Harbinger: A New, Genre-Bending Gay Fiction Thriller from Keegan Kennedy

Release Banner-The Harbinger-Keegan Kennedy

The Author and The Idea…

The Harbinger was born, in part, from growing up in the 1980’s. At that time, our culture was plagued by fear. It was everywhere–on the news, in conversations, in nightmares… As I think back, nuclear war was often presented by the media as a likely event. In retrospect, I now see it for what it was… Reagan-Era propaganda that was meant to keep everyone scared shitless. Unfortunately, things haven’t changed too much… But it wasn’t just the media. Every other movie out there, it seemed, were full of slashers and killers, wars and disasters, and the end of the world. My favorites of these movies were always the huge Hollywood disaster flicks with fabulous all-star casts. Gloom and doom and the fantasy of starting over are common themes that endlessly fascinate us. And, of course, we’re still in the grips of our zombie obsession.

My background is in gay romance and erotica. As a fan of post-apocalyptic and Sci-Fi fiction, I’ve noticed the glaring absence of major gay characters. Usually, they’re resigned to be comic sidekicks, minor characters with occasional one-liners, or characters unable to defend themselves. Two of the four major characters in The Harbinger are gay and are portrayed in a realistic light, as flawed people who are just like anyone else–fighting to survive. Of course, there are some zombie-type creatures, but my “creepers” aren’t like anything I’ve read before. It would be incorrect to categorize this as a “gay” or “zombie” book because there’s much more going on… I wanted to express a different point of view that is lacking in most post-apocalyptic books. Instead of jumping into the middle of the story and telling how the world fell apart in a flashback, lasting for maybe a page and a half, which is fine for some writers and fans, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to examine and watch the world fall apart through the eyes of the characters and attempt to convey the emotions they experience. So The Harbinger begins with these characters living their lives with their own sets of issues and problems. Before they know it, their worlds have been annihilated and they face these extraordinary circumstances.

Synopsis: The Harbinger

It starts as a whisper, barely audible.

Rumors. Paranoia. Conspiracy theories. Subterfuge.

Like lightning, the plague moves across the globe, spreading out in all directions. When the naysayers can no longer ignore the wails and moans of the dying, the Harbinger will already have them by their throats.

But the end is only the beginning…

Discovered in the Alaskan permafrost, the ancient virus was reanimated and genetically-altered. The new strain showed great promise in curing many of mankind’s afflictions. When the specimen fell into the hands of the Russian theocracy, their inept scientists attempted to create a biological weapon—a weapon that outsmarted them.

Now, the androvirus is a deadly airborne plague, conquering the world in a matter of days. With a communicability of 100% and a mortality rate of over 90%, there is no immunity. For the survivors, who can suppress the virus, there is only change. A few adapt, but most become walking, talking gray horrors with an appetite for flesh.

Primarily set in the American city of Memphis, four loosely-connected strangers, caught up in their lives, find their worlds annihilated by the swiftly-moving plague.

Alex Connelly is a wealthy, young executive, living an idyllic life with his pregnant wife, Madison. Kirk Foster is a self-absorbed aging gay man, desperate to hang onto his youth and sex appeal. Meredith Brinkley’s on-going war with breast cancer takes a turn for the worse, and she faces an impending double mastectomy. Logan King is a closeted baseball jock, playing for a minor league team while coming to terms with his true identity. And only together will they survive…

An Excerpt From The Harbinger

In the wee hours of the morning of July 29th, Grigori Yeltsin passed a huge commotion as he walked into Pulkovo-St. Petersburg Airport.

The commotion was none other than a moaning obese man with a beard, Vitaly Milonov, being loaded into an ambulance.

Grigori had barely given the scene a second look, but the pathogen had noticed him, latching onto the tall, dark-haired man in his forties for a lethal piggyback ride.

He was running late, so after going through the security checkpoints, Yeltsin passed the viral taint to all the ticket agents, security, and incoming passengers that Milonov hadn’t infected on his way out.

Rushing through the terminal, the handsome, athletic man passed hundreds of people—some already infected with the virus and the others Grigori infected unwittingly. Those that Yeltsin and Milonov infected with the pathogen became clueless carriers of the swiftly-moving plague.

On the flight from St. Petersburg to Brussels, Yeltsin infected all four hundred and nineteen persons. By the time the plane landed, Yeltsin felt a bit tired, but aside from that, he was fine. Waiting for his connecting flight to New York, Grigori had a breakfast of Chinese food while texting his wife. By the time that he called his mistress, the red-haired Illia, who lived in an apartment that he paid for, the reception on his phone was choppy, but he didn’t dwell on it. After speaking to Illia, Grigori called the thirteen-year-old boy that he was also fucking. The boy, Jaska, a pretty youth with blond hair, who could actually be called the wealthy man’s second mistress, also resided in a luxury apartment that Yeltsin paid for. By the conclusion of his second call, his phone was cutting out to the point of annoyance.

He sat at the gate for his flight to New York City and attempted to check the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on his phone, but oddly, he couldn’t connect to the Internet. Frustrated, he gave up. As Grigori boarded the large jet to New York, he was energized. He was excited about the new construction project that his company was about to undertake. Unlike many business trips, this one was personal. The amphitheater that he was to build had been a long-time dream. The concert hall was to be named after his mother, Oksana. She had died of whooping cough when he was a boy. After spending hundreds of millions of rubles to bribe all the right officials, Yeltsin expected his mother’s name would now live on forever.

The firm that he was partnering with was a company called Hollister Engineering.  They had a prestigious reputation and were known for their incredible feats of construction and engineering. The company was even flying up one of their bests from Memphis, Tennessee. The only thing Yeltsin knew about Memphis was that Elvis Presley had lived there. He hoped the young man, who was making the presentation on the following day, Alexander Connelly, would tell him much more about the Land of Elvis—Elvis Presley being Yeltsin’s all-time favorite singer.

Although the virus had shifted, taking longer to show its first symptoms post infection, the airborne plague was no less virulent or deadly. In fact, during his layover, Yeltsin had passed the sickness on to thousands, who boarded flights to Rome, Atlanta, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aries, Madrid, Paris, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Casablanca, Reykjavik, Toronto, Montreal, Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney, Melbourne, and Washington DC.

The wheels of the harbinger were turning…

Keegan Kennedy: 10 Things I Want to Do Before I Die

  1. Have sex with (top him) gay porn star Riley Price.
  2. Meet Kylie Minogue.
  3. Visit Easter Island.
  4. Visit Iceland.
  5. Visit Sweden.
  6. Smoke weed with Willie Nelson.
  7. Be topped by Actor Andy Buckley (David Wallace from The Office)
  8. Write an international best seller.
  9. Retire from my day job to write full time.
  10. Pay off my student loans.

  1. Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.I actively challenge stereotypes of women, racial minorities, and gay people. One of the toughest characters turns out to be gay. Also, The Harbinger highlights the incredible diversity of the city of Memphis.
  2. Tell us something about your work in progress. What is it about?

I’m starting a new series about two men, who aren’t completely likable, who are star-crossed lovers. I wanted to challenge the romance novel genre—one that i truly love. At this time, I can’t use the character names or the title of the series as sometimes, the name of the work and the characters have been known to suddenly turn up in a hastily written project. I’ve found as an indie author that the element of surprise is paramount.

  1. What are you reading now?

The Understatement of the Year by Sarina Bowen

  1. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Stephen King. Marian Zimmer Bradley. Mary Calmes.

  1. How do you come up with the titles to your books?

Often, I will change the title multiple times. It happens organically. There was one 2015 erotic novella that I had the hardest time with. Eventually, I called it: ”The Rugby Alpha.” I still find the title bland and uninteresting.

  1. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

It’s always been in my blood, but I can’t really say with certainty.

“I’m not playing games, Dr. Hunter.”

I backed up until I was leaning on the opposite counter, crossed my legs, and folded my arms against my chest. “Then explain to me why I haven’t heard from you all week. I get it was our first date and it turned into a really shitty night, but I thought we ended on a high note.” Jules’ eyes widened and she bit her bottom lip. Yeah, she thinks it ended on a high note too. “I text, I call a few times, and not once did you think to pick up the phone or text back. I’m the first to admit that I’m rusty in the dating department, actually if you want to know the truth, I haven’t dated since my wife died. I’ve hooked up, not going to lie, but I haven’t dated someone with the intention of getting to know them. You’re the exception. So I’m asking, what’s with the games?”

“I needed a minute.” Her voice was low and trailed off. So much so, I thought I misheard. Then she broke eye contact and scurried away, opening cabinets and drawers for plates and silverware.

“A minute, as in four days?” We apparently had a different definition of a minute, so I needed clarification. Suddenly, the anger I thought I was over began to resurface. “Look, Jules, I’m sorry I don’t have the luxury of tiptoeing around your feelings here, so I’m going to come straight out and tell you that your minute doesn’t work for me. And it sure as hell doesn’t work for my family. I’m not trying to pressure you into anything, but I have kids, kids that already know you. Kids that already like you. This was not news when we hooked up. So if you aren’t into it, into me, or you decided all of a sudden you have an issue with my baggage, I need to know and we’ll end it now.”

Before they get too attached. Liar. Before I get too attached.

Damn, she was making me soft. She froze mid-plate grab and pivoted back around with her eyes squinted together at a peculiar angle. This expression was a new one and not one of my favorites if I had to compare. “Baggage?” She dragged out the word and cocked her head more to one side. Shit. “You think I consider Maxine and Finn baggage?” The tide changed, and I sensed she wasn’t exactly feeling me right at this moment. “Is that what you’ve been thinking all week? Seriously … seriously?” The second seriously hit an octave I’d yet to hear from her and probably could do without hearing again, so I opted to use my northern brain and keep my mouth shut. “How could you even think that? Not for one point one second. Do you hear me?”

Nope, still not answering. That was a trick question.

“Have I ever given you any inclination that I had an issue with Finn or Max, ever? No. Never!” She answered for me, loudly, and she was pissed. “I adore your children, and I’m just as attached to them as they are to me. That’s why we needed a minute. Everything was moving so fast. You don’t even know anything about me and you opened your home to … to me. You called me a natural, for God’s sake. You have no idea. So I didn’t know what to do with that, and you needed time to think about all that. I’m not sure either of us were ready for what we already let happen, never mind more. That’s why I didn’t call.”

Oh, we needed a minute. What were we, French now? I was tempted to call her on it, especially on the half of what she said that made no sense, but the look in her eyes stopped me. There was a vulnerability there, a softness, so I let her have that play. For now.

“Tell me, are you sure now?” I asked with a bite. She turned her back to me and unwrapped and plated the breakfast sandwiches.

Don’t think so, doll. You got your answer, my turn.

I walked up behind her, pressing my front to her back, pinning her in. She involuntarily shuddered, sucking in a bit of air when I kissed the spot where her neck met her collarbone. “Are you sure, Jules?” This time I asked against her skin.

Her entire body stiffened and she whispered, “No.”

Fuck.

Abruption is an absolutely stunning story – on so many levels – I’m going to give you a list of reasons why you should one-click it right now. It’s …

…Absorbing – to the point of addiction. I couldn’t put it down.

…Beautiful – Beautifully written, with compelling characters that will live in your heart long after the last page – and dialogue you’ll want to read over and over again.

…Real – A relatable storyline and well-developed characters draws you in immediately and keeps your interest from page one.

…Unexpected – The synopsis is only the beginning; there is much more to the story than meets the eye.

…Passionate – and satisfying in every way. These characters are not only passionate about each other, but about what they do, who they are, who they’ve been and who they want to be.The chemistry between Guy & Jules builds, and their intimate scenes are positively breath-taking. Their love for the children will bring tears to your eyes. This is more than a romance, it’s a story of family, and that makes it even more powerful than you expect.

…Twisted – This story is much more than it appears from the synopsis. Expect just enough twists & turns to keep you guessing from beginning to end. And to make the HEA that much sweeter.

…Intense – Suspenseful and emotional, Abruption evokes every human emotion in the best possible way.

…Outstanding – Perfectly paced, perfectly balanced – the story moves along and takes you with it until you lose your sense of time and place.

…Narrated in alternating POV, each principal character is given a voice that makes them come alive to the point that you feel like they’re family.

I’ve been a fan of Riley Mackensie since their debut novel, Beautifully Awake (followed by Beautifully Done), and have waited months for Abruption to be released. It was so worth the wait … and now I’m waiting again, for their next story. If you love stories that have all of the characteristics on my list – and more – this is the book, and these are the authors for you.

Yep. That’s an “s.” There are two of us!

We’re East coast girls separated by Long Island Sound who met in Physician Assistant School and have been besties ever since. We can safely say that thirteen miles of water does not get in the way because we talk or text, no exaggeration, at least 150 times a day. No, really, we do—about everything and nothing. Shockingly, we never (we mean never) run out of things to say.  Umm, ever. We definitely laugh A LOT and we’re a tad sarcastic. And if we’re being totally honest, one or two people might have, on occasion, used our names and ‘dramatic’ in the same sentence. But it’s hard to trust the sources since they married us.

It only took twelve years, two husbands, five kids, two dogs, and a two-week vacation in Cape Cod later to decide the romance world needed a splash of medicine. Write what you know.

So you can easily find us at 4 o’clock on Bank Street beach with a glass of cold Prosecco brainstorming. And guaranteed if we bump into you, literally, it’s only because our iPhones are glued to our hands (totally out of our control) either writing or editing our next novel (and yes, it is possible to do from your iPhone, we mastered it … damn those straight quotations).

When we are not working on our book or reading the latest angsty romance on our kindles, you basically name it and we have it going on. Soccer, lacrosse, golf, swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, chess, baseball, basketball, skiing, ice skating, school, homework, and more school.

Oh yeah, did we forget to mention our careers in medicine?

Needless to say, we realized fast that something had to go, so we opted for sleep. It’s completely overrated (yet so AMAZING) and delirium makes everything funnier. Good thing we share a brain and can pretty much complete each other’s sentences (definitely weird, we know).

So that’s our story, who we are … just add AUTHORS to the list!

About Griffins Rugby and the One to Fifteen Foundation

Kyle D 4 n

Griffins Rugby is a Rugby Club that values the commitment and sacrifices of our Armed Forces Personnel and Veterans. The transition back from the combat zone to everyday life can prove to be a challenge, with issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) a major concern. Griffin’s Rugby Club is a program that develops squads of veterans that play competitive matches, giving our former soldiers an environment where they can experience all of the benefits of sports – a sense of connection and purpose, a place to relieve stress through physical and mental exercise, and a place to simply have fun – without bearing the burden of additional cost. Participating in rugby requires discipline, hard work, structure and teamwork – not so different from military training. Your team becomes your family.

Words from a Soldier’s Heart …

When I first walked on to the pitch that hot afternoon in July, I quickly found that rugby is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for the weak willed. Like the Marine Corps, rugby holds its foundation in discipline, sweat, and above all team work. Despite being sorely out matched, as my conditioning was not up to par, I was hooked. I loved the feel of breaking through my physical limits, I loved looking to my left and to my right, seeing men that would risk life and limb for me. I loved having them look at me and know the same.

Rugby has been the greatest gift I ever received, and with that in mind I hope to spread the word about its wonders to all. While any man, woman, or child can reap the benefits of rugby there is a special group who could use it more than other; our veterans. The similarities between rugby and the military are countless in number, but above all it serves as life purpose for those who fancy themselves tough enough. Before I played rugby, I was a portly drunkard, with nothing in mind but my own selfish desires. Now I rest and rise under the blanket of support provided by my team. I lift and run every day, not just to better myself but to better my team.

After my discharge I thought the days of brute physicality, and loving camaraderie were long gone. But by freak random occurrence I found myself on the pitch that fateful afternoon in July, not knowing how much I would affect me. Not long after I started playing the team’s founder came to me with a plan; to offer rugby to veterans. I was shocked, this Englishman who had never spent a day I uniform had seen all the similarities between rugby and the military, he had a deep appreciation for our veterans, and wanted to help them as much as I did. He proposed the One to Fifteen Program, a program that would allow veterans to play rugby cost free, while also assisting them with crucial employment networking, and above all giving them a team to fight for again. When mentioned that the program should also be named in memorial, my heart dropped.

Naming the One to Fifteen Program after my close friend who was killed in Afghanistan, Adam Peak was the greatest honor I could think to ensure his legacy lived on. Like all those who wear the Griffins Badge on their chest, Adam Peak was neither weak willed nor faint of heart. I know in my heart of hearts he is smiling down from heaven, supremely content that even in death his spirit continues to live on and continues to support his brothers. Griffins Rugby is a very special squad, we’re more like a family, and with the inception of the One to Fifteen Adam Peak Rugby Foundation our family will continue to grow and fill its ranks with our countries greatest.     ~ John Wangler

Synopsis:

“… And the greatest of these is love.”

Love is patient and kind… Its strength can build bridges and knock down walls. It can give people hope – a purpose. But there is a side to love that is unforgiving and cruel – a side to love that breaks hearts.

Love can suffocate, and love can turn to hate.

Billy Taylor meandered through life, only ever giving half. Ruled by his father’s grief, he gave up on his own dreams in a bid to keep life ticking along, desperately craving the unconditional love of his parents. It wasn’t until Eve Swallow fell into his life again, rousing his empty heart, that he dared to hope for a chance to live life on his terms.

Never quite good enough in the eyes of her overpowering mother, Eve kept herself locked away inside her own head, immersing herself in her passion for art and music, and doing anything in her power to avoid getting close to anyone. When she connected with Billy’s eyes, that still haunted her dreams after so long, fear kicked in, and all she could do was the one thing she was sure would protect her…

Run.

If two lost souls collided and a love so deep was born, it would surely take a herd of elephants to tear them apart…

Meet the Author

Raised in a little village in North Wales, a fierce love of books and reading was instilled in Eleanor by her parents from a very early age, and she has vivid memories of reading secretly under the blankets with a torch for hours after lights out, often getting caught! She was blown away by The Borribles Trilogy – Michael De Larrabeiti at nine years old, and it was then that she fell head over heels with idea of imaginary worlds.

A persistent and professional daydreamer, something she still prides herself on being, she spent most of her early childhood inside her own head making up stories or scenarios, climbing trees, building dens or doing anything arts and crafty. Music also played a huge part of her young life. Growing up on The Beatles, U2 and Status Quo, her obsession with Top of the Pops and vinyl twelve inches grew into a love affair with music that has only grown and expanded over time: there is rarely a moment where music is not playing in her life, and in turn, rarely a time when she is not singing, even if it is in her head!

She had always thought she would write a book some day – it has been an ambition for as long as she can remember – and has always been told that she ‘has a way with words’. Over the years, she’s dabbled in the odd piece of prose, helped friends to write letters and résumés and prides herself on her hilarious lyrical genius when composing poems for friends birthdays! Life, however, got in the way and her dream was stored on the back burner as she put herself through university and started a family. It was only when she was nearing the ‘forty’ milestone that she decided it was time she got some of the ramblings and chatterings in her head down on paper.

A creative, guitar-playing mum of one boisterous, but pretty damn cool boy, she classes herself as a Yorkshire gal now after moving to Leeds when she was eleven. Eleanor works full time as a teacher, but grabs every spare minute she can to write; be it on the train, lunchtimes at school or foregoing sleep for an extra hour or two in the evenings. Her hope for the future is for people to fall in love with her characters as much as she does. Not a big ask really!

When gorgeous local farmer Leo Maxwell delivers her a lovely bunch of organic walnuts, Roxie wonders if a summer back home isn’t such a bad idea after all. Leo is heavily involved in the sustainable slow food movement, and he likes to take his time. In all things. Roxie is determined to head back to the west coast as soon as summer ends, but will the pull of lazy fireflies and her very own Almanzo Wilder be enough to keep her home for good?
